WFES folds

After over 45 years in the community, the Wheatland Further Education Society (WFES) has folded.
According to Joyce Bazant, WFES executive director, the society’s board of directors were finding themselves unable to act in accordance with the objective of the society and comply with the direction of the past government when it came to granting funding requirements.
“Therefore, the board of directors determined that the society was deemed no longer viable, and it has been determined by the board of directors that there is no alternative mission that is appropriate,” said Bazant.
WFES was formed in November 1973 and the last programs were offered June 30, 2019.
Some of the programs that WFES offered within Wheatland County and Strathmore included English language learning, adult literacy and family literacy, computer skills including Simply Accounting and QuickBooks, website building, community capacity building, workplace essential skills, languages, personal development and enjoyment classes, and children and youth classes.
“During 2016-17, WFES delivered 67 programs, providing over 400 instructional hours to 581 students,” noted Bazant. Additionally, in 2017-18, WFES delivered 75 programs providing 435 instructional hours to 542 students, and in 2018-19, WFES delivered 53 programs providing 454 instructional hours to 423 students.
“WFES partnered with other organizations, for example, Prospect Wheatland Employment Services,” added Bazant. “These organizations will continue to offer programs such as interview skills, network and work search strategies, and LinkedIn and other social media.”
