Arts on 817 will host a concert by The Arrogant Worms on Friday, March 22 at 7:30 p.m. at Strathmore United Church.
The Arrogant Worms is a Canadian group, and Carolyn Steeves, artistic director of Arts on 817, first saw them perform on Parliament Hill in Ottawa, on Canada Day years ago.
“They were singing ‘Canada’s got rocks and trees and trees and rocks and rocks and trees and trees and rocks and rocks and trees and trees and rocks – and water,’” she said.
“I was standing there with my son, listening to this song, going, ‘Who are these people?’ Everybody on Parliament Hill (was) belting out these words.”
Then, as her sons were growing up, they often attended Arrogant Worms concerts when they came to Alberta.
“We had a whole bunch of their CDs,” she said. “They would sing songs like Carrot Juice is Murder, and The Last Saskatchewan Pirate. They’re just corny and extremely funny.”
Steeves hopes to see lots of families and children at the Arts on 817 concert, and the ticket price for age 17 and under has been kept to just $10.
“It’s a good concert for young families,” Steeves said. “It’s just pure Canadiana, and it’s pure comedy. It’s quirky. It’s funny. It’s very accessible. It’s just a nice couple of hours away from the reality of the world. You sort of forget everything and just have fun. I’m sure that there will be people who will sing along. They encourage that; they encourage audience participation.”
The Arrogant Worms concert is the fifth of six concerts that Arts on 817 is hosting in their second season, all performed at Strathmore United Church. Their final concert of the season will be GhostBoy featuring Leon Leontaridis, May 10.
