For 13-year-old Emma Moore, a community’s need is quite simply a call to action.
Under the name Em’s Donation Projects, Moore has contributed over $15,000 to various campaigns she has established to support needs that have been identified in Strathmore and area. Beginning this mission at the age of 10, Moore vowed to help people in need.
Moore has orchestrated and carried out various campaigns over the past four year, including Em’s Purse Project, Senior’s Secret Service Christmas Cheer Program, collecting donations for the Veteran’s Food Bank, Em’s Bedtime Bundles, the Wheatland County Food Bank Hygiene Drive and the Hunger Sucks Campaign. She also teamed up with Brentwood and Wheatland Elementary Schools this year to sell suckers for their Lickin’ Hunger Campaign, which raised funds for Moore’s Hunger Sucks Campaign.
Though she is truly grateful for her past partners, such as local businesses, community members, and her friends and family, Moore generally flies solo when it comes to organizing these campaigns. Her donation of time is simply her way of staying committed to the needs within Strathmore and area.
“I have a really good life and family. It makes me sad that other kids don’t always have that, so that’s what keeps me going,” she said.
To recognize Moore’s efforts, the office of MP Martin Shields awarded her with the 2018 Bow River Volunteerism Award this summer. Nominated by Strathmore town councillor Bob Sobol, this award identifies Moore as instrumental to community development through volunteerism. While she said she is very proud of this accomplishment, she added she doesn’t do the projects for recognition, but simply to do the right thing.
As part of his letter of congratulations to Moore, MP Shields stated, “Community service is a vital part of social life. (Moore’s) commitment to this service will serve (her) well through the rest of (her) life… (her) lifetime dedication to volunteering is inspiring.”
Information on how to donate to her up-and-coming project, Clean Campaign, as well as future campaigns, can be found on her Facebook page at Em’s Donation Projects, or by contacting her through email at emsdonationprojects@gmail.com.
“I appreciate getting recognized, but it’s not just me… I have been really lucky that I have a lot of great people who continue to support me every time I run a project,” Moore said.
