Holy Cross Hawks humbled in Nanton

Turnovers slowed the Holy Cross Collegiate Hawks boys’ basketball team during the Nanton tournament last weekend against a couple of provincially-ranked 1A schools.
The tourney opened with the Hawks getting grounded by the Livingstone School Sabres 72-46.
“We only trailed by six entering the third quarter and held a lead at moments in the first half,” said Hawks Head Coach Josh Jalbert. “But to lose by that many gets frustrating even though they were a ranked team.”
Grade 11 standout Alex Nwoye led the way for the Hawks with 17 points, while Landon Osachuk and Ralph Valencia chipped in with 10 points each. Osachuk also led the team with 11 rebounds.
Earlier in the season, the Hawks lost by 20 points to the Rundle College Academy Rockies. In their second meeting, the Hawks completely turned the tables on the Rockies and crushed them 80-33.
Leading the way was Osachuk with 18 points, Valencia with 16 and Nwoye with 15 points and 10 rebounds.
Last month Nwoye set a career high with a 58-point performance. He poured in 43 points in the Hawks final game, as they fell 76-70 to the Drumheller Valley Secondary School Dynos. Valencia and Osachuk continued their strong play with 10 and 11 points respectively.
“We were able to get within six in the second half once we started pressing with our defence, but it just wasn’t enough to put us over the top,” said Jalbert.
The Hawks will be in Vermilion for another tournament this weekend.

Lady Hawks rested
The senior girls were without action last week as they make their way back from the exam break. The team hosted the Foothills Composite High School Falcons Feb. 8 and will be at the Carstairs tournament this weekend. They were last in action Jan.16.
