Wrestlers entertain at the Legion

In a sport where back-stabbing, heel-turning and betrayal are the lifeblood, camaraderie won out in a battle for the Canadian Heavyweight Championship.
Belt holder Heavy Metal shocked the Real Canadian Wrestling crowd Oct. 19 at the Strathmore Royal Canadian Legion when, before the match, he announced he would voluntarily offer up the heavyweight title to the winner of his match with D. Dwight Davis in the co-main event.
Heavy Metal claimed to have paid attention to how hard Davis had been working, taking on any willing fighter, travelling for fights and showing heart in his matches.
That was where the gracefulness ended, for the time being.
The two would exchange cheap shots for the next several minutes: eye-poking, hair-pulling and groin-kicking.
After putting their differences aside, the match spilled into ringside, where Heavy Metal sent Davis flying into the side of the ring. Ticked, Davis charged Heavy Metal, but the defending champ swiftly grabbed Davis’ girlfriend, who was ringside, as a shield.
Returning inside the ring, the two lined up for matching groin kicks. Connecting simultaneously, they fell to the mat as the ref disqualified them both.
Returning the favour, Davis took to the mic to thank Heavy Metal for the opportunity and they walked out of the ring as friends.
In the main event, crowd favourite Scott Justice was pinned against the Irish irritant, Danno Burns.
With no belt on the line, Burns was terrified of Justice at the beginning, scurrying out of the ring any chance he got.
Finally engaging, the two exchanged headlocks and arm bars, trying to gain the upper hand.
Burns grabbed momentum when he connected on a double knee strike from the second rope to Justice’s chin. Justice responded by raising Burns above his head and dropping him on his right knee, nearly snapping his back in half.
Burns looked to make Justice tap out with an incredibly creative submission move, but Justice wiggled free. After some Sweet Chin Music, Justice set up his finishing move, the One-Winged Angel, dropping Burns on his head, putting him to sleep.
The evening opened with a triple-threat match, featuring Jordan Aries, Ben Franklin and Cameron Stevens.
Franklin immediately hopped out of the ring after the initial bell, as he was severely undersized, letting the two big boys scrap it out.
Stevens had his knee beat down, leaving him slow and powerless outside of the ring. A flying knee from Franklin to Aries’ jaw left him motionless, as Franklin slid over for the easy pin fall.
The shortest bout of the evening featured the French Connection Andre Williams and Brice The Slammer Sova.
After walking around getting the crowd riled up, wanting to slam the 325-pound French Connection, the Slammer somehow found the strength to lift the wrestler, who outweighs him by 90 pounds, over his head and power-bombed for the three-count.
In the oddest match of the night, Brian Bedlam was too distracted with his puppet and adviser Willie most of the match, but received a hand from Burns to secure the victory.
Bedlam was rolling around in pain following a Zack Mercury tombstone, when Burns came running down the hallway, wanting to challenge Mercury. Burns distracted Mercury long enough for Bedlam to heal, and long enough to distract the ref, as he ran up the steps, clocking Mercury in the head.
Stumbling backwards, Mercury tripped over the ref and the sprawled-out Bedlam, he collapsed perfectly into an inversed pin, falling in three taps.
The crowd was enthused and enjoyed a night of wrestling and will be anxious to see the event return to Strathmore Nov. 23, when it will either be RCW or wrestlers from Top Talent taking over.
