The Rockyview Reds Mosquito baseball team claimed the provincial silver medal after a solid weekend of baseball July 24-25.
The Reds – consisting of players from Strathmore, Siksika and Drumheller – traveled to Fort McMurray after using qualifying tournaments in Lacombe (July 3-4) and Sundre (July 10-11) as building blocks.
The Reds started the tournament on the right foot by defeating Elk Point 13-6 on the strength of Connor Dunlop, who claimed the games Heart & Hustle Award.
Despite Chance Breaker’s solid play in the second game, which earned him the game’s Heart & Hustle Award, the Reds fell 8-6 to the hometown team, earning a second place finish in their pool.
In the semi-final, the Reds hitters were on fire, en route to an early 8-0 lead. NE Edmonton clawed their way back to 8-6, before Hunter Biskup made a superb double play to end the game. Saige Hall earned the Heart & Hustle Award.
In the final, the Reds ran into a very hot host team, despite Eric Westman’s Heart & Hustle performance.
“The team really gelled in a short period of time and really peaked in the provincials with several outstanding plays being made in the field and at the plate,” said Head Coach Darin Dunlop.
The Reds consisted of; Hunter Biskup, Saige Hall, Eric Westman,
Lyndon Brass, Chance Breaker, Connor Dunlop, Dawson Hoerdt, Brandon Snyder and Devon Swan. Team members Kobe Holloway, Devon Bear Hat and Kashtin Running Rabbit could not travel with the team to Fort McMurray, but were key members of the Reds success.
