Shooting for charity

Saturday and Sunday saw the first, possibly annual, charity paintball tournament held at Crosshairs Paintball Ltd. Fred and Joni Maunsell own Crosshairs Paintball Ltd, and work for Global Training Centre next door. Every year the Global Training Centre hosts two main events to raise money for different charities as well as a few other smaller type events. All money being raised this year is going to the Children’s Wish Foundation. Earlier this summer there was a garage sale, and a car wash, and at Christmas they adopt families and do food hamper drives. “Global has a social committee, and both Fred and I are on the committee, and Fred brought up holding a charity paintball tournament,” said Joni.
For $400, teams were given a beef on a bun dinner, three games, and all of the paintball gear they needed. Volunteers ran the weekend, and there were nine teams registered.

“We were hoping for 20 (teams), but we got nine, so we’re hoping for more next year,” said Joni. There were three levels of game played, an A, B and C level, and the Strathmore Rural Fire Department came in second for the B level.

For those who didn’t want to run the field but still wanted to be a part of the fun, there was a shoot out. For $5 people had a chance to test their marksmanship by shooting eight cans off a wooden sawhorse. Participants were given 12 paintballs, and the person with the highest score won a gun set.

The weekend ended with many people commenting that they would like to come back again next year.
“We don’t have the final figures but we figure it’s got to be close to the $10,000 mark,” said Joni.
