Show and sale a success

Rockyford hosted a district 4-H show and sale at the Sportsplex on June 12.  There were four groups showing off their cattle for judging, and selling them afterwards.

Brody Gardener, 23, was the confirmation judge for the day. Gardener has been judging since he was nine-years-old and has judged six shows already this year.

“It was awesome. It might have been as consistent of a group of steers as I have judged all year in terms of finish,” said Gardener.

“I’ve been to a lot of the shows this spring that had a lot of 1,600lb steers and then a lot of 900lb steers, and it was too much of a range in my opinion.”

The cattle were clipped and groomed, and some even had their hooves polished. By clipping the animal it helps the judge have a better idea of what it might look like under the skin. Each cow had a chart showing their name, how much they weigh, and how much they gain on a daily basis.

The daily weight gain is charted to help the judges, and buyers see how efficiently the animal converts the feed into beef.

“It was a tremendous sale. The sale got a little softer at the end, but the champions sure sold well and the lambs sold well also,” said Gardener.

Brother and sister Cody and Taylor Isley were the showmanship and grooming judges.
