Inaugural scholarship for high school student

Strathmore High School, SHS, student Lauren Gavey was the first student to be awarded the student of the year scholarship. Bruce Farms Ltd. decided they wanted to begin a scholarship program at the school.

“It’s my dad, he had an inspiration and thought it would be a good idea to do,” said Sonny Warrack.

“We laid out the criteria and what we wanted that person to exemplify. The teachers showed us the student of the year criteria and it was pretty much the same,” said Warrack.

This was the first time the $5,000 scholarship had been awarded but from now on it will be given away every year. Bruce Farms gave the school $100,000, which was then placed in a secure investment to be used to fund the award every year.

Students who win the scholarship do not get to cash a cheque right away; there are still further criteria they need to meet.

“What’s going to happen is when a kid wins it and they enroll into a post secondary program, they will bring back their transcripts to the school at the end of the year and it will be broken up depending on how many years they go to school,” said Warrack. For example if a student registers in a two-year course, then at the end of each year they will receive a cheque for $2,500.

In the event that the money in the scholarship fund isn’t enough to keep it going every year, the Bruce Farms is prepared to top it up said Warrack.
