Registrations are now open for one of winter’s most anticipated community events as the Gleichen Gunners annual pond hockey event, Hockey Day in G.A., returns on Feb. 14 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Hosted by the Gleichen and District Minor Hockey Association, the family-friendly celebration invites young players from across Alberta to come together for a day centered on fun, friendship and the true spirit of Canada’s game.
“This event really captures who we are as a hockey family,” said Melissa Piche, Vice President of the Gleichen and District Minor Hockey Association. “It’s about bringing kids together, letting them play and reminding everyone that hockey should always be fun, welcoming and built on respect.”
The non-contact, 4-on-4 shinny-style event is open to individual players aged 4 to 17, male or female. Players will be placed into teams, and they will enjoy three games played on two indoor ice surfaces, making it an accessible and inclusive experience for participants of all skill levels.
“Our philosophy is focused on development and enjoyment, not pressure,” Piche explained. “Whether a player is brand new to the game or has years of experience, this day is about confidence, teamwork and loving the sport.”
A $10 registration fee per participant includes three games, lunch and an event souvenir package, offering families an affordable way to celebrate Hockey Day in G.A. Full equipment is required and players do not need to be currently registered with an association to take part.
“We want barriers removed,” said Piche. “Hockey belongs to everyone. Events like this show kids that effort, sportsmanship and being part of a team matter far more than the final score.”
Registration information can be found on their Facebook page or their website www.gleichenpondhockey.ca, with payment accepted via e-transfer to gleichenph.treasurer@gmail.com.
As part of the association’s broader commitment to youth development, the event reflects the values of fair play, cooperation and personal growth that guide the Gleichen and District Minor Hockey program throughout the season.
“Hockey teaches life lessons that go well beyond the rink,” Piche said. “When kids leave the ice smiling, feeling supported and proud of their effort, that’s a win for everyone.”
