ZIEHR, Norbert Georg

Ziehr,Norbert Georg

With deepest sadness we announce the passing of Norbert Georg Ziehr, who passed away at home on the farm on the afternoon of February 17, 2025.

Norbert was born in Bamberg Germany and moved with his brother and parents to Canada when he was 5. His dad was a carpenter by trade with dreams of being a farmer, so Alberta became their home and they established Ziehr Farms in 1958.

He met his love Margaret in Strathmore and they married in 1975 and started a family.

Norbert built the house his children grew up in, adding on to it as the number of children grew. He worked hard on the farm to provide for everyone, building barns, sheds, & shops for the farm, and somehow also found the time to build miniature houses for the kids to play in. He made ziplines and tire swings after milking cows all day. He built motorcycles and dune buggies with the boys, who all inherited his love of cars, engines, and tinkering. He spent hours working on Volkswagens, visiting auction sales, and working the land. Bert enjoyed the outdoors and nature, visiting the mountains or just walking outside on the farm with his animals.

In his later years Norbert loved the simple things in life. Watching the deer walk by his window, sitting in his chair by the fire and chatting with his family, and mowing his lawn in the sunshine (and the occasional bush that got in the way of the mower) were some of his favourite things to do. He always had time for a coffee and a chat and would make everyone he met feel welcome. He was involved with the Sacred Heart Parish most of his life and made many great friendships in the community.

Norbert was pre-deceased by his parents Hannelore and Johann, and his brothers Bernardt & Clarke. He leaves behind his loving wife Margaret, his children Stephen (April), Michael (Charlotte), Christopher, Liza Marie (Ryan), Kristina (Jeff), Angelina, & Nicholas (Rebecca), and his grandchildren Madison, Charlie, Campbell, Draiden, Riot, Savannah, Caleb, Neo, Owen, and baby Johnathan.

We will always remember him as the farmer who showed what it meant to be strong, to be kind, to take pride in what you’ve built, and to welcome everyone into your home with love and respect.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, March 4, 2025 at Sacred Heart Parish at 11:00 a.m. All are welcome.
