KOEN, Gawie 

Gawie Koen, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully  on November 12, 2025, at the age of 86 in Strathmore, AB, Canada. Born on September 25, 1939, in Hartbeesfontein, South Africa, Gawie’s life was a testament to his love for his family, his faith, and the great outdoors.

Gawie is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Maria Koen, and their four devoted children, Hannelie Cilliers, Daniel Koen (married to Adele), Carolina Geldenhuys (married to Heinrich), and Mariette Muller (married to Emile). He was a proud grandfather to Liza Peoples (married to Nick), Gawie Koen Jr. (married to Wendy) , Letitia Koen (engaged to Jason), Albertus Geldenhuys (married to Chelsea), Iris-Louise Geldenhuys, Sam Muller, Gabriel Muller, and Elizabeth Muller. His legacy continues to shine in the lives of his great-grandchildren, Annabeth Peoples, Jack Koen, Audrey Koen and Wyatt Geldenhuys.

Gawie’s life in South Africa as a farmer was marked by his love for the land and his passion for hunting. After moving to Canada in 2006, Gawie brought the same passion and dedication to his new home.

A man of deep Christian faith, Gawie lived his beliefs through his actions, embodying the love and grace taught in the scriptures. His wisdom and faith-filled perspective were a source of comfort and inspiration to all who knew him.

Not one to sit idle, Gawie had a great passion for travelling and also for building and fixing things, a testament to his resourceful and inventive nature. There was no challenge too great for him to tackle and he approached each project with enthusiasm and precision.

His love for good food was matched by the joy he found in visiting with family and friends, where his stories and laughter would fill the room.

Described as loving, wise and faith-filled, Gawie ‘s influence and memory will live on in the hearts of those he touched. His life was a journey of love, commitment and service, and his presence will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who were fortunate enough to have known him.

Gawie’s journey on this earth has concluded, but his spirit continues to guide us. As we remember him, let us celebrate the love he shared, the wisdom he imparted, and the faith that sustained him. Gawie Koen’s story is one of a life well-lived, and his legacy will endure for generations to come.

The family would like to thank Dr. Piesas, the staff at Strathmore Hospital, and Strathmore Home Care for their care and compassion that they gave Gawie.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, November 27, 2025, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church at 11:00 a.m.
