GULKA, Ernest (Ernie) William

GULKA,Ernest (Ernie) William

Ernie passed away peacefully on January 11, 2025, at the age of 91 years.

Ernie is survived by his wife of 68 years Elizabeth (Betty); two daughters, Sandra (Ken) and Sharon (Paul); five grandchildren; brother Vern (Flo) and nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his sisters Ann and Kelly.

Ernie was born in Preeceville, SK in 1933, and moved from the farm with his parents to Saskatoon in 1942.

A standout athlete in his youth, Ernie excelled at both hockey and football. He played with the Flin Flon Bombers in 1951 & 1952 serving as Assistant Captain.

He also began playing football at City Park Collegiate, and then as a high-profile member of the powerhouse Saskatoon Hilltops, with whom he would go on to win the 1953 Canadian Junior Football Championship. In 1971, Ernie was a member of that same Hilltops team elected to the Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame. He remained a lifelong alumnus.

In 1956, Ernie married the love of his life Betty, and they moved to Calgary, AB where they would raise their two daughters and live for the next 43 years. In 1999, Ernie and Betty retired to Strathmore, AB.

Quick with a smile or a corny dad joke, Ernie was always there to help or assist family and friends. He was a legendary handyman, and loved to listen to his music and was not afraid to dance. He enjoyed watching his sports and was a die hard Habs fan. Those who knew him well also were aware that he could be quite vocal if the refs made the wrong call! All and all, Ernie was a gentle soul with a genuine appreciation for life and family.

The family would like to thank the staff and caregivers at Agecare Sagewood in Strathmore (Dawson Lake & Namaka) for their kindness and care of Ernie for the past three years.

A private celebration of life will be held later this year.
