Spartans successful weekend

Strathmore Spartans found success in Camrose at the University of Augustana Volleyball tournament on Sept. 7.

The senior girls volleyball team is a mixture of veteran players with some freshman and underclassmen. These new additions to the team have added skill and energy, while playing senior volleyball for the first time.

The veterans gave it their all this weekend, with this being their last year of high school volleyball, and they left everything on the court and it paid off. After losing the first set of the semifinal 15-23, the girls came back stronger in the second set and won 26-24. Using the momentum from the win, the Spartans won the third set 15-11 earning a spot in the final.

After playing four games back-to-back, they unfortunately ran out of gas by the time the final came around. They competed in a competitive final against a highly-ranked team and lost in two sets.

Two athletes were recognized by the Augustana coaches for their efforts this weekend – Ashley Hieburt received Finals MVP and Meghan Flaws received tournament all-star.

While these two were recognized, it takes a team of 12 to be able to pull off what these girls accomplished this weekend … every player gave their all and had huge contributions earlier in the tournament.

The coaches are excited to see what these girls have in store for the rest of the season.
