Wayne Douglas Wise, a beloved father, grandfather, and professional horse racing trainer, passed away at 79. Wayne was passionate about horses, hockey, pheasant hunting, water skiing, snow skiing, travelling, playing pool, and spending time with family and friends. His early years were on the Wise farm near Rockyford, and he later moved to Calgary, where he attended Crescent Heights High School. A highlight of his high school years was winning the Provincial Midget Championship in hockey. Wayne went on to earn a business diploma at SAIT and belonged to the fraternity Kappa Sigma Tau. Wayne was preceded in death by his mother Helen Marten (Bensted), sister Laura Wise, father Owen Wise, and stepfather Lawrence Marten.
Wayne is survived by his loving sons, Richard (Rick) and Robert (Bobby) Wise, and his cherished grandchildren, Katelyn and Jackson Wise, along with his daughter-in-law, Lisa Wise. Gordon Gowdy has been a devoted friend. Wayne was previously married to Geri Gowdy (Jasper), and was proud of the two boys they raised, their horse racing & equine business, farming at Chestermere Lake, family travels, and all the places they called home in Alberta and Arizona.
Wayne’s passion for horses resulted in a remarkable career in thoroughbred horse racing, featuring an impressive win percentage, from 1965 to retirement in 1991. He was highly respected within the racing community and travelled extensively for racing between Arizona, California, and Alberta.
In addition to horses, Wayne had a deep love for hockey and remained an avid player. Wayne also had a special bond with his dogs, with his fondest memories tied to his beloved dog Jack who rode on his motorcycle with him in his adolescent years through the neighborhood of Rosedale.
