Snow White comes to town

The Strathmore Theatre Players’ Guild is gearing up to present their fall show, Snow White – a Pantomime Nov. 3-5 at the Hope Community Covenant Church in Strathmore.

Pantomime is a stage production designed for family entertainment, with more modern pantomimes including songs, gags slapstick comedy and dancing.

“Pantomime is intended to be very family-friendly and silly and fun and take something like Snow White – a fairy tale that everybody knows – and throw in some pop culture references and jokes and audience participation,” said Tashina Mackenzie, a long-time member of the guild.

She explains that the fall performance is very family-friendly.

“It’s great for kids because the kids are supposed to shout at the bad guy, they’re supposed to cheer for the good hero or heroine and they’re supposed to argue with the character on the stage who is obviously saying something that isn’t true,” she said. “It’s very engaging.”

The actors have been hard at work for about six weeks by the time they are ready to perform on Nov. 3. The cast and crew have been practicing three times a week up until opening night.

“Its’s quite a group effort,” said McKenzie.

She said that sometimes crew members are doing multiple roles such as acting as well as stage design or lighting, for example.

Snow White – a Pantomime will run the first three weekends in November at the Hope Community Covenant Church in Strathmore: Fridays, Nov. 3, 10 and 17 at 7 p.m. nightly. Saturdays, Nov. 4, 11 and 18 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Sundays, Nov. 5 and 12 at noon and 2 p.m.
