1936 – October 31, 2023
Don Shelley, a dedicated individual who spent a significant part of his life in the service of others, passed away peacefully on October 31, 2023, surrounded by his loving family. He was 87 years old.
Don’s commitment to the well-being of his community led him to a lifelong career in emergency services. In 1982 he co-founded Global Training Centre in Strathmore, Alberta, with his daughter Debbie with the sole mission of saving lives and making a difference. His passion for saving lives started way before Global, when he opened one of the first ambulance services in Calgary – Stampede Ambulance. His need “to help” continued with his service, in both Strathmore & Wheatland rural fire departments, and just recently received from the Government of Canada his Fire Services Exemplary Services Medal in recognition of 50 years of service. He leaves behind a legacy of love, selflessness, and service.
In addition to his remarkable professional life, Don was pre-deceased by his beloved of 65 years Joan Marguerite Shelley (Banning). He was a loving father to children, Debbie (Delor) and Michael (Connie), proud grandfather to J.R. (Dwila), Taryn, Tashina, Joshua, Justin, William (Hope) and Bridget, and great grandfather to Delor (J.R. & Dwila) and Teagan (William & Hope), and good friends Wayne & Robin Caughell.
Don will be remembered for his unwavering commitment to helping others, his contributions to safety and emergency services, his warm and loving presence, and the countless lives he touched throughout his journey. He will be deeply missed and forever cherished by his family, friends, and the community he served.
Mom & Dad were avid jive dancers, so Dad’s request was no funeral and a rockin’ good 50’s themed dance – so get your poodle skirts ready! This will be held in early 2024, so please watch for the announcement. In lieu of flowers a firefighters boot will be present at the celebration of life for donations in his memory.
