1923-2023

Clarence Robert “Cy” Putnam passed away on January 19th, 2023, at the AgeCare Sagewood facility in Strathmore, Alberta at the age of 99.

Cy was born on October 18th, 1923 and was the first child of Robert and Marge Putnam.  He grew up on the family farm in Nightingale, which he later took over from his father. After completing his schooling, he signed up as a pilot with the Air Force in the midst of the Second World War.  He spent a year in Aberdeen, Scotland training with the British Royal Navy.

Upon returning from overseas, Cy returned to the family farm and married Helen Way on November 3rd, 1947 and raised six children. Cy was a highly regarded and prominent figure in the Nightingale community for his entire life.  He was also an avid reader, card player and world traveller. 

Cy is survived by his son Lorne Putnam; daughters Elaine (Ed) Connolly, Laurel (David) Young, Heather Bishop, and Nola (Lorne) Newitt; grandchildren Trevor, Tyler, Nicholas, Patrick, Stephanie, Scott, Devon, Richard, Dillon and Cailey; and great-grandchildren Aidan, Emma, Ava, Mia, Brooklyn, Isabella and Oscar. He is pre-deceased by his wife of 73 years Helen in 2020, son Kerry Putnam in 2017, parents Robert and Marge Putnam, and sisters Doris Thurston and Margaret Eberl.

The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff and especially nurse Sandra at Sagewood for their care and compassion over the past three and a half years.

A service in memory of Cy will be held on Friday, February 10th, 2023 at 1:00 pm at the Hope Covenant Church in Strathmore.  The service will also be live streamed.
