April 24, 1980 – December 23, 2021
Genny, or Gen to her friends and family, passed away at the Peter Lougheed Centre in Calgary on December 23, 2021 at the age of 41, surrounded by family and friends.
Genny was born in Calgary at the former Grace Hospital on April 24, 1980 during a nurse’s strike, and was raised in Strathmore, the oldest of three children. This was to be a foreshadowing of her life to follow. Never one to say no to trying new things, she was always involved in different activities. Piano lessons, gymnastics, and later tumbling and trampoline and skiing were some of the activities she enjoyed. The latter led to an interest in Freestyle skiing, more particularly aerials. Flips on the water ramp in Red Deer were followed by flips on snow at Fortress Mountain. She was a member of the Southern Alberta Freestyle Ski Association and later the Alberta Freestyle Ski Association in the mid 90’s. Injuries forced an end to these activities. Time to do something else! She finished her schooling in Strathmore and enrolled in Lethbridge Community College taking the Law Enforcement program. Genny transferred to Mount Royal College, but discovered this was not something she would be happy doing. Some jobs passed and she finally took a job with her Dad who was the owner of an electrical contracting company in Strathmore and area. This led to her attaining a Red Seal (Journeyman) as an electrician. Various companies and experiences as an owner of her business in Strathmore later, she was attracted to the Bonnyville area and the oil and gas industry. She and her partner, Tyler, moved there where she worked for a number of years in that industry. A new chapter in her life opened with the birth of their son, Tucker, on June 11, 2015. He was the love of her life. She was a devoted Mom who loved to cook wonderful, sometimes exotic, meals, and who loved entertaining family and friends as much as possible. Christmas was always a special time and she spared no effort on this day.
Genny is survived by her partner of many years, Tyler Hamilton, and their son, Tucker. Also by her parents Terry and Margaret (Maggie) (Simpson) of Strathmore, her brother Tyson of Calgary, and sister Kerilyn (Steve) Grove of Strathmore, and their two children, Orion and Xander, special nephews she doted on. She was predeceased by her grandparents Alfred and Jeanne (Turcotte) Trachsel, and Alex and “Ross” Redfern.
A memorial was held on Friday, September 9, 2022 at the Strathaven Community Centre in Strathmore.
In lieu of flowers, if you wish, donations can be made to the Wheatland Hospice Society, or any other charity of your choice.
