Lassiter, Robert Stanley (Stan)

Lassiter,Robert Stanley (Stan)

It is with deep sadness the family of Robert Stanley (Stan) Lassiter announce his passing on August 03, 2022, at the Brooks Health Centre. Stan was born on January 30, 1934, in Chin, Alberta, to Oscar Bruce Lassiter and Mary Alice (Archer). Stan and his eight siblings moved with his parents to the John Ware Ranch near Duchess in 1949. In 1952 they moved to Bassano and farmed at Makepeace. His four sons still work the family farm today. Stan married Ruth Agnes (Meidinger), daughter of Rosina (Schaffer) and Albert Meidinger, on February 12, 1955, in Bassano. They were together for 67 years. They lived on the family farm until they moved to Bassano in 1962. Stan bought a Kenworth tractor and hauled for Pacific Inland Express. In 1967 he purchased land at Duck Lake near Hussar. He retired from farming in the mid 80’s but always enjoyed being involved. He was a devoted son, brother, husband, father, uncle, grandfather, and friend (especially to furry ones). Throughout his life he supported hockey and figure skating at the Bassano Arena. He had many hobbies; hunting, fishing, woodworking, bird watching, and photography. Stan was a “Jack of all trades”, could fix anything and everything, and if not, he would rebuild it. Stan especially enjoyed spending time with friends at the Imperial Hotel, and in later years, having coffee and doing word searches at Rosie’s Roadside Grill. He is survived by his wife Ruth Agnes and his six children; Barry (Leslie Hannah), Connie (Greg Long), Robert (Cheryl), Kent (Nancy), Brenda Lassiter-Oliver (Randy Johnson), and Darrel (Carrie). He was the proud grandfather of eleven children and thirteen great grandchildren; Simon Long (Nathalie) Isabella, Everly; Brandon Oliver (Ashlie); David Long (Robyn) Nolan, Marlee; Chase Oliver (Amanda) Arabelle, Haynes; Colton Lassiter (Ashley); Brittany (Khim Taing) Liam, Ariya; Adam Long (Shelby); Payden Lassiter (Christy) Rayne, Loki, Wrennyn; Clayton Lassiter (Jennica) Penelope, Clarke; Cody and Taylor Lassiter. Stan’s surviving siblings are Nina Jensen, Leonard, Byron (Marlene), Tobi (Karl) Hentze, Caral (Ivan) Beagle, Judy Schelske, and Lynn (Jim) Powlesland. Stan was predeceased by his infant sister Shirley Mae (1935), infant brother Eric (1946), sister Mildred Nelson (1972), father Oscar Bruce (1977), mother Mary Alice (1994), and sister Pat Reimer (2002), and brother in-laws Jake Reimer, Abe Reimer, Roy Nelson, and Glen Schelske. Stan will be sorely missed by many.

Close the Gate (For Dad)

For this one farmer the worries are over, lie

Down and rest your head,

Your time has been and struggles enough, put

The tractor in the shed.

Your labour is done, your home now is heaven; no

More must you wait,

Your legacy lives on, your love of the land, and

We will close the gate.

                                                    Nancy Kraayenhof

Following Stan’s wishes, there will be a family only celebration of his 88 years of life.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made directly to the Bassano Elks Lodge #487 to help with a new roof and repairs, 338 2nd Avenue, Bassano, Alberta   T0J 0B0.
