The Wheatland Kings officially capped off their 2021-2022 season when they hosted their annual awards banquet on April 8 at the Strathmore Family Centre.
It was a successful season for the local Junior B team, who finished the campaign with a 17-18-1 record and made it to the second round of the HJHL playoffs.
In front of family, friends and team sponsors, the Kings gathered one last time to celebrate the season with a nice buffet dinner and awards banquet.
Goaltender Brett Willan was named the teams Most Valuable Player, while Zach Suntjens took home the Top Defenceman title.
Jayden Hendricks and Garret Vander Ploeg were both presented the Top Forward, while Chase Clayton was selected the teams Most Dedicated Player.
Because the COVID-19 pandemic stopped the 2019-2020 season and essentially cancelled the following campaign, the Kings felt obligated to present that season’s Rookie of the Year to Jaycob Masciangelo. Forward Joel Romano claimed this season’s Rookie of the Year.
The Strathmore Times Player of the Year is awarded to the player(s) who accumulate the most Player of the Game honours during the course of the campaign. Brett Willan and Kage Yellowfly finished the season in a tie and were both named the Strathmore Times Player of the Year.
The team also honoured graduating players Vander Ploeg, Suntjens, Willan and Hendricks as ‘Forever a King.’
