Hebbes, Roger Barrie

Hebbes,Roger Barrie

August 6, 1928 ~ April 23, 2022

Roger was carried peacefully home to Glory on April 23, 2022.

He lived at a time when the economy was extremely slow, and was taught to be thrifty.  As a child he felt unloved and sad. The family attended church in a private home every Sunday and the service included singing. He became a believer when the congregation sang, “Jesus loves me, this I know. From then on he knew and firmly believed that the Lord Jesus always loved him, and that was his confidence until he passed away.

Roger was born August 6, 1928 in the Holy Cross Hospital in Calgary and grew up on a farm near Carseland. He received his Public and High School education there.  Roger was an excellent student. His recall ability was fantastic – and he always seemed to have a book, magazine, or newspaper in his hands and kept up to date on a wide number of subjects, naming a few – it would be from biblical, ancient, present history, politics, cars, cars, cars!

He worked various jobs after high school, but then also managed to obtain some Bible College training at Prairie Bible Institute, and graduated from Berean Bible College in Calgary.  Around that time, he realized that his parents needed help on the farm, and dedicated up to fifteen years helping them, thus discouraging special career training for himself.  However, he did find opportunity to seek employment and with his bible college education was able to step into a Social Work position up in High Prairie, Alberta.  Roger really loved the career of helping and advising people, which were two of his strong points. This job later got him connected with a Government position.  He continued with the job until the Social Credit government was defeated.

Roger returned to Carseland, and settled there, and bought some real estate which he kept improving.  He met and married Lois Berg, a nurse from Saskatoon, who was working in Calgary, and she then commuted after their marriage.  We had a wonderful marriage for forty-three years, and spent many weekends hiking, and just sight-seeing. We also did some traveling.

With advancing years comes advanced problems and on February 10, 2021, Roger being a diabetic with it’s problems, needed to have an above knee amputation; a very difficult and stressful surgery, He did quite well, although painful with spasms and phantom attacks again he rallied, but after a little more than a year and two months his old symptoms returned and slowly he went downhill and passed away April 23, 2022, at 10:30 p.m. However, we do believe that he is now safely in Heaven, made whole, and has two legs.

Roger leaves to mourn his loving wife Lois, his sister Audrey Agar, and also numerous nieces and nephews, and friends.  He was predeceased by his Dad and Mom, Hugh and Alecia Hebbes, his brothers Murray (Dulcie) and Bud (Anne) Hebes, and brother-in-law Don Agar.

Thanks to the hospital staff for the care given, and special thanks for the support given by Dr. O’Brien.
