A terrific trio coming to town

By Melissa Piche Times Contributor

The Aurora Trio will be returning for a concert fit for the holidays on Nov. 25 at 7:30 p.m. at the Strathmore United Church.

People may remember the group as the trio that played in the Season 1 of the concert series.

The trio consists of Timothy Steeves on violin, Max Geissler on cello and Jani Parsons on the piano

The group was founded in 2012 and at the time there were three Canadians and three Americans who formed the group, calling themselves Latitude 49. The name is inspired by the border that rests between Canada and the United States, representing ‘a bridge between artists, composers and listeners of today.’

“They love to play together, they are great friends and great collaborators” said Carolyn Steeves, chair of The Vault Cultural Collective. “They wanted to play a concert together so they found time where they get off and can perform a concert together.”

Steeves explains that life has taken the friends in all different directions, from North Carolina to Vancouver, so getting together to play has been a struggle.

“We are very happy to have them back,” said Carolyn.

Both Timothy and Parsons are well known to the Strathmore United Church – Timothy having grown up in Strathmore and Parsons having played for the congregation in the past, so revisiting old stomping grounds will be sure to conjure up feelings of nostalgia.

“It’s going to be an amazing concert,” said Carolyn. “The arts were hit incredibly badly by Covid people couldn’t perform.”

She explains that it’s been over two years since some artists have performed publicly.

“Performing is just coming back to life and it’s not just another concert for this group,” said Carolyn. “It’s going to be very special.”

Timothy is the Associate Concertmaster of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, while Max Geissler is doctorate candidate at the Rice University in Houston, Tex. Jani Parson is the head pianist at the University of Calgary.
