Shelley, Joan M (nee Banning)

Shelley,Joan M (nee Banning)

May 27, 1941- Oct 28, 2021

Known in her retirement for her love of anything green, especially flowers. She was never happier then when she had her hands in the dirt planting, plucking, nurturing. She was passionate about all things wild that you could secretly feed (so she could take millions of pictures), avid theatre and arts supporter, and amateur photographer – hence the millions of pictures. Absolutely loved to travel especially road trips where she could scout out the casino’s.

Prior to retiring she was the ultimate advocate and role model for woman. She never shied from breaking ground, as her and Dad started Stampede Ambulance in Calgary, mom became the first female ambulance attendant in Alberta in 1959. From there it was a whirlwind life of Don and Joan always working together and starting one more business, from restaurants, automotive shops, to oilfield service companies, with Mom always right beside Dad, and later myself their daughter as we started “another” business, Global Training Centre.

Mom grew up in pincher creek but moved to Calgary in the late 40’s, attending school in Calgary, where she met the love of her life Don Shelley. She was a devoted Mother to Debbie (Delor Silva) and Michael, Grandmother to JR Shelley (Dwila), Joshua, Justin, Taryn & Tashina Silva, Bridget and William (Hope) Shelley, and Great Grandmother to Delor (Shelley), and Teagan (Shelley), and the very best of friends with Robin and Wayne Caughell.

A direct family farewell will be held this week, and a celebration of life at the Royal Canadian Strathmore Legion #10  on December 3,  4:00 pm and in lieu of flowers we ask that you donate directly to the Royal Canadian Legion #10 by etransfer RCL10@shaw.ca in mom’s name.   To share condolences, pictures, stories, please visit www.choicememorial.com
