The Town of Strathmore library board was successful in their application for a provincial multiculturalism, Indigenous and inclusion grant (MIIG).

The grant is designed to support initiatives and projects that foster intercultural awareness and understanding.

“Our province includes people from diverse racial, religious and ethnic backgrounds who have contributed to our beautiful cultural tapestry,” said Leela Sharon Aheer, Minister of Culture, Multiculturalism and Status of Women and Chestermere-Strathmore MLA. “The MIIG projects will focus on what brings Albertans together so they can work against preconceived stereotypes and discrimination. This intercultural understanding will help build a more welcoming and safe province for all.”

The Strathmore library plans to showcase the histories of Siksika Nation and the Town of Strathmore through a storyboard and videos of elders and seniors in both communities.

“The work of libraries revolves around education and connection. The MIIG program funding will allow our library to make a real and meaningful difference in our community by building a better understanding of Indigenous culture, strengthening intercultural relationships in our community, and working towards reconciliation,” said Rachel Dick Hughes, director of library services.

The first intake of the program will include 24 projects receiving a total of $400,000 from the province.
