Hockey summer camps to be held

Young hockey players will have no shortage of choice when it comes to hockey camps being held in the next few weeks. Beginning on Aug. 9, a week-long camp will be held by the Strathmore Minor Hockey Association (SMHA) in partnership with Attack Sports. After that, Edge Hockey Schools will be holding their own camp beginning on Aug. 16.

Attack Sports has been contacted by the SMHA to provide on-ice training for the camp, says Head of the SMHA Development Committee, Paden Grant.

“It’s an opportunity for our members to get a high-level camp at a reasonable rate,” he said. “It’s also a little bit of a fundraiser to help us secure some funds for our development committee’s budget for the winter.”

The SMHA and Attack Sports camp will have a focus on skill development and power skating.

“They’ll be doing some power skating depending on the age group. We have from U7 up to U13. And then we also have goalie camp going on at the same time. It’s more geared towards skill specific stuff, so stick handling, shooting,” said Grant. “Just working on their skills ahead of next season.”

The camp will cost $150 per player and registration can be done online at smhockey.com.

Edge Hockey Schools are also offering a camp in Strathmore, at the Family Centre Arena, running from Aug. 16-20.

The camp is for all skill levels and ages 6-14. The camps are not only offering time on the ice, but a diverse array of activities designed to make the camps as informative and fun as possible.

Edge is pledging just above two hours of ice time, around one hour each for conditioning and “read and react,” half an hour of “hockey talk,” and one hour of cross training/pool time per day.

The camp is limited to 160 participants, and will cost $529, plus a lunch option for an extra $75. Visit edgehockey.net to register for the camp, and more information will be available on the Edge Hockey Schools Facebook page.
