Grade 5 class raises money for charity

Trinity Christian Academy’s Grade 5 class raised $450 for Ducks Unlimited Canada after they researched and sold mask holders.

The students had already been designing pretend businesses in class, until they decided to pursue the idea for their community impact project.

“My classroom thought that it would be pretty cool if they could develop a business on their own and then we could raise money for a charity,” said teacher Brady Kautz.

Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC) was chosen because the class thought it was overshadowed by other charities.

“They researched charities in the town of Strathmore and we voted on which one to work on. We chose Ducks Unlimited because the wetlands is part of the Grade 5 curriculum; a lot of people donate to the Children’s Hospital and different charities like that, but we kind of thought they (DUC) got neglected.”

The young entrepreneurs named their business Legendary Mask Holders and utilized social media like Facebook and Instagram to spread the word about their products.

Kautz said the students were well prepared for their business ventures.

“They came up with the ideas themselves and then they had to research the product, how much it would cost, what the profit would be.”

The mask holders were sold for $5, and the class turned a profit of $450. All of the proceeds were donated to DUC, and the students even got credit.

“It obviously impacted our community, but it was also curricular so it was part of their language arts mark,” said Kautz.
