The Strathmore and District Chamber of Commerce recently decided to change its name to represent more businesses within Wheatland County.
“’District’ is so very non-specific,” said chamber president Hailey Poirier. “Our chamber wants to recognize that we are one very large county with businesses that we need to support.”
The Strathmore and District Chamber of Commerce has considered a name change to the Strathmore Wheatland Chamber of Commerce; however, Poirier said they are “still in the processes of nailing all of the details down.”
Poirier said that by changing the name, there will be more businesses becoming members of the organization.
There are about 100 members in the neighbourhood of the Strathmore and District Chamber of Commerce, with 40 new potential members, said Poirier.
“There’s definitely a positive move forward,” said Poirier.
Chamber executive director Shawn Kisling said Wheatland County has “done a heck of a lot with the chamber,” and so the chamber believes they should be present.
“District is a pretty vague title for the area,” said Kisling, “whereas Strathmore and Wheatland encompass the entire area, especially the businesses.
“We want the Wheatland area to be recognized as well,” he added.
The price for the name change will be “nothing too huge,” said Kisling, as it will mainly be for the name change of the website.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Strathmore and District Chamber of Commerce had to postpone their meeting with Wheatland County council to discuss the potential name change, as well as the chamber’s annual general meeting on March 30.
In a virtual chamber meeting on April 8, the chamber will do a full presentation on what it will be changing its name to and exactly how much the name change will cost.
