Ready, set, slide: playgrounds reopening

The relaunch from COVID-19 continues, as almost all playgrounds in Strathmore and Wheatland County have reopened.
Strathmore’s playgrounds and most of its outdoor recreational facilities reopened on June 5, as announced by Mayor Pat Fule in a video address posted to Facebook on June 3.
“I am so happy that kids will be able to get back to our playgrounds,” said Fule. “However, we still have to remain vigilant against the spread of COVID-19.”
The skate park, tennis courts, outdoor rink, basketball courts and greenspaces have also been opened to families and individual players. However, the splash park will remain closed until Phase 3 of the provincial relaunch strategy is underway, noted Fule.
However, residents should be aware some restrictions may still be in place at these sites, he added. “Provincial guidelines require changes to how we use all these spaces, so please play attention to all posted signage.”
Changes to how residents use these outdoors facilities are still in place, said Fule in a Facebook live address on June 5.
“Physical distancing is still very important,” he said. “It’s really important to supervise your kids as much as possible, and make sure they wash their hands before and after they play.”
Wheatland County playgrounds reopened on May 22. However, playground users must comply with gathering restrictions and maintain physical distancing of two metres between individuals that are not from the same household, according to county administration. Users of these facilities are also encouraged to practice proper hand hygiene, including frequent hand washing, and use of hand sanitizer immediately before and after using playground equipment. Also, residents are encouraged to consider sticking to playgrounds close to their homes.
The Village of Rockyford also announced its playgrounds reopened on May 22.
Hussar and Standard were scheduled to discuss their playground reopenings at their respective village council meetings this week.
