Inconsistent play hampered the Holy Cross Collegiate Hawks senior boys’ basketball team as they split their four games at the 2020 Supermen Classic in Three Hills Jan. 31 and Feb. 1.
The 16-team tournament featured teams from across Alberta.
“I think we struggled for a lot of the weekend to play to our potential,” said Hawks coach Josh Jalbert. “We would play well for a quarter or maybe a half, but couldn’t string it all together for a full game.”
On Friday, the Hawks lost their first game against Calgary Christian 86-56, but bounced back to defeat E. W. Pratt from High Level in a close one, 78-72.
Saturday the Hawks followed the same pattern, dropping their first game to the Lundbreck Sabres 74-56.
“At times we lacked effort on defense and did not seem interested in the game. We need to be mentally stronger,” said Jalbert.
The Hawks finished their weekend strong with a 66-57 win against Holy Redeemer from Edson.
“In our final game against Holy Redeemer, we played strong in the second half. We were patient with the ball and ran our offence, taking smart shots and it showed on the scoreboard,” he said.
The Hawks are in Canmore this weekend for Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Academy’s Winter Invitational tournament.
