Firearm failure

Martin Shields, Member of Parliament for Bow River, issued the following statement on the Liberals’ new firearms regulations:

“I am very strongly opposed to these changes. This Liberal government has made it clear throughout this crisis that they do not respect the democratic role of Parliament. These changes are yet another stark example of that disrespect for our parliamentary democracy. If the Liberals truly believe these changes are justified, they should wait until this pandemic is behind us so we can debate and vote on this matter in the House of Commons.

“Canadians are rightly upset by the horrific attack in Nova Scotia and want answers. However, as the RCMP has made clear, the Nova Scotia shooter did not have a firearms licence. His guns were illegal. Taking firearms away from law-abiding citizens does nothing to stop dangerous criminals who obtain their guns illegally.

“The reality is that the vast majority of gun crimes are committed with illegally acquired firearms. Today’s announcement does nothing to solve this problem. Conservatives have proposed common-sense firearms policies that keep guns out of the hands of dangerous criminals. The Liberals ignore these proposals and instead opt to target law-abiding firearms owners.

“Conservatives remain committed to ensuring that Canadians are safe and secure in their homes and in their communities. We will not support non-sensical policies that do nothing but target legal firearms owners.”
