Fall risk and prevention
By Sean Freeman Strathmore Fire Department
Strathmore Fire Department would like to remind everyone about the importance of fall prevention. The dramatic changes in temperature, frost and snow increase the chance of experiencing a slip, trip or fall.
The Centre for Disease Control states that falls are the number one injury and life-changing factor that people can experience. Keep stairwells clear and turn on lights before going up or down the stairs.
Change in health conditions and aging can be factors in falls. Take your time; the “penguin walk” is not a new dance, but an effective measure to prevent falls. Take a wide stance, knees bent a little, and keep your weight on the front of your legs as you walk. Ice and snow can make the ground slippery without warning, take precautions.
