Detonators found outside fire hall

A suspicious package labelled “explosive” was found outside the Strathmore Fire Hall on Sept. 11.

According to a news release by the Town of Strathmore, the Strathmore Fire Department responded with “established procedures.” After the RCMP were contacted, the fire department established a perimeter around the device, and an explosive disposal unit was dispatched to the scene.

The package contained commercial grade detonators which were removed for disposal. Detonators can initiate an explosion through either chemical, mechanical or electrical means, but it was not disclosed what type were found.

According to the town, the situation did not require evacuation of residents from surrounding neighbourhoods, and appropriate measures were taken to ensure public safety.

Anyone requiring proper disposal of explosives should contact Strathmore RCMP, said Strathmore Fire Chief Trent West.

If any resident or business locates explosives in town, they should contact Strathmore RCMP immediately at 403-934-3535 or 911 in an emergency. Any potentially dangerous material should not be transported to a police station or fire hall.
