For the first time in its 26-year history, the annual Badlands Passion Play has been postponed.
The 27th season of the Badlands Passion Play will be presented July 2-18, 2021, with the dramatic portrayal of the life, death and resurrection of Christ with a script by Royale Sproule and music by Bill Hamm.
The theatre announced the 2020 play was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“It has become impossible to begin our seasonal work on such a large production while following the public health restrictions on public gatherings,” said Vance Neudorf, Badlands Passion Play executive director. “Normally, in May and June, we require up to 200 theatre professionals, actors and volunteers working at the Badlands Amphitheatre preparing to open the Badlands Passion Play in July. We are all so disappointed that this summer we cannot welcome our guests to experience the theatrical version of the life of Christ on Canada’s largest outdoor stage.”
Tickets purchased for this year’s performance of the Badlands Passion Play will be honoured for the 2021 performance. Purchased tickets may also be donated to the Badlands Passion Play Society in return for an official tax receipt.
Badlands Amphitheatre is still hopeful that late summer and fall events, including the Tom Cochrane with Red Rider concert on Aug. 29, the Roots, Blues and Barbecue event on Sept. 12, and LightFest: Fireworks in the Badlands on Nov. 14, will continue as scheduled.
Work is also continuing on the new 5,000-square-foot Badlands Arts Centre which will enable the Badlands Amphitheatre to host arts events throughout the year.
