The Strathmore High School Spartans football team wrapped up their season with a year-end banquet at the Strathmore High School on Nov. 22.
Their season came to an early end with four season wins and five losses. The team pulled together to play a good 9-2 game, winning against Rundle College in the consolation final for the Big Rock Football Conference.
“We were a young team this year that was competitive in every game we played in,” said head coach Travis Gorski. “With all the ups and downs of the season, our boys showed tremendous grit and heart as they progressed through the season and grew as a team.”
Graduating players this year include John Gibbons, Nick Heaton, Teerawat Satirawong, Brandon Middlemiss, Issac Musselman, Gabe Matatall, Malikia Henry, Ricardo Hernandez and Max Sims.
“The future looks bright as we return 35 out of 44 players and add some talented Grade 9s to the roster,” said Gorski.
Season awards were handed out at the banquet and included Nick Heaton being named most valuable player and Cooper Nelson as D player of the game. Both Jack Warrack and Marcus Molina were awarded rookies of the year; most improved was Noah Agboro; and the Spartan pride awards were given out to Max Sims and Malakai Henry.
The team will be getting back into shape to prepare for next year with offseason workouts set to begin in December by utilizing some field time at the Strathmore Motor Products Sports Centre every Wednesday afternoon.
Team captains for the upcoming season were also named, with the six captains being held to a high standard to provide reliable leadership and guidance for the entire team. New team captains are Cooper Nelson, Tony Suteenoppaken, Kaden Warren, Jack Warrack, Bennett Salmon and Marcus Molina.
“The expectations of our team next year will be to compete in the ASAA provincial championships and push to win the Big Rock Football Conference,” said Gorski.
