Something for everyone at Wheatland Society of Arts summer camps

This summer marks the third year for the Wheatland Society of Arts (WSA) summer art camps, held at their downtown studio. There is a session scheduled for July 22-26, and another for Aug. 12-16.
In summers past, the camps for children aged nine and up focused on one form of art each week. This year, however, the WSA has re-formatted the camp schedule.
In order to keep the children engaged, they’ll tackle one specific discipline each day. Giving the participants a variety of projects and art techniques will not only allow them to focus but also bolster their self-confidence. The goal is to involve the campers in the art process as a whole, regardless of the style of art that’s being studied.
Monday will be an exploration of fine arts, Tuesday will focus on jewelry-making, and Wednesday will be devoted to different styles of animation.
On Thursday, instructors will switch gears to 3D art and sculpture. Children will craft works of art with different media, such as wire wrapping, packing tape sculpting or using broken toys to create their own unique “frankentoys”.
Friday’s finale will be a study of modern art.
“We hope to get an art installation put together,” said WSA’s Jennifer Mamer. “It will be a collaboration, like a mural piece, that can be showcased in a public space. Ultimately, the project will depend on the group of kids and their interests.”
Instead of capping the number of participants, the WSA brings in more volunteers depending on how many children are registered. The camp is led by four instructors over the five days, who tailor their sessions to the strengths and interests of the campers and incorporate games and activities into their lessons. Mamer finds mixing things up is the key to success.
“It’s important to keep the kids interested,” she said. “But at the same time, we know when the kids need a break. Sometimes we end up taking them outdoors so they can play in the park and burn off some pent-up energy.”
Then they can return to the studio refreshed and recharged so they can create their own personal masterpieces.
There are still some spots available in both sessions. The $180 registration fee includes all supplies. For more information, visit wheatlandarts.ca or the WSA Facebook page.
