A group of Strathmore High School (SHS) students have concocted a club to help save our earth.
The Save Our Roots Club is selling reusable straws and donating profits to a good cause.
“We knew we couldn’t do nothing,” said Sam Pritchard, one of the club’s founders.
The founders were in biology class when they heard about the human race’s impact on the planet, and how unlikely it seemed that people with power, and governments and corporations, would do anything about it. They realized what was being done wasn’t enough, since United Nations scientists predicted the earth has 11 years before climate impact is irreversible.
Instead of accepting the climate fate, these students decided to act. After reading up on the negative impact that plastics have on the environment, they started searching for something they could do to reduce one-use plastic consumption in the community. They learned of the effect plastic straws have on sea turtles, so the group purchased reusable straws and began selling them at SHS during lunchtime.
All profits from the endeavour go to environmental organizations.
“The environment and its health affects everyone,” the founders said.
The club meets weekly to give ideas about what else they can do to create change, and have a team of people who control the financials and the dates of their sales.
During the sales, they are always helpful, and full of information to give.
“It’s not up to adults to find a solution, we have to be a part of that solution.”
With such a success in this school year, everyone is anticipating what the club will do next. All their efforts are taking hold, and they really are saving our roots.
