February 13, 1923 – Oyen, Alberta
May 16, 2019 – Calgary, Alberta
Dolly has gone dancing! Our dear Mother died on Thursday, May 16, 2019 aged 96.
Told how old she was when asked her reply was always a shocked “Really?” She was living in Bow View Manor in Calgary for ten years and her family has greatly appreciated the tender and loving care to Mom of the staff there. She considered them part of her family. Born in Oyen, AB, she enjoyed her childhood raised on a farm with her parents, sister and brothers, and cousins nearby. Her first job as a telephone operator took her to Brooks and then to Edmonton where she spent the next sixty years. While raising her family in Jasper Place, she contributed to the fast-growing Edmonton region by organizing Brownie and Girl Guide troops, becoming a Girl Guide Commissioner. She loved the outdoors, exploring much of Western Canada on camping and fishing trips with her husband and children. She worked in retail sales, her last and most enjoyable job with Peoples Jewellers in diamond sales. She excelled there and made friends of her customers. Shortly before retirement, dancing and travel became her passions. West Edmonton Seniors was a great enjoyment, and through that association she danced and competed successfully at Senior Games. Travel took Mom all over Canada and through much of Europe and smaller parts of Asia. Many winters were spent in Yuma, Ariz. with her brother Harry as well. Dolly never met a stranger on her travels, only new friends.
Dolly is survived by her brother, Grant Jorgenson and wife Pat of Calgary, AB; her daughter, Sharon White and husband Dean of Strathmore, AB; her son, Ken H. Newman and wife Joan of Victoria, BC; grandchildren, Dena Annand and husband Ritchie, David White and wife Sina, Jenne Newman and husband Jason Planidin, and Sara Newman. She loved and enjoyed her six great-grandchildren who loved her right back – Axel, Brom and Carys Annand, Davina White, Ruby and Parker Planidin. She is also survived by nieces Lynn Johnson (Dale) and Donna Thomas (Denny), and nephews Mark Jorgenson (Cecilia) and Ryan Jorgenson.
Mom was predeceased by her parents, Henry and Hilda Jorgenson; sister, Ethel Carran (Ray); brothers, Arnold and Harry Jorgenson; and her son, Bryan Newman.
