Ryan Schmidt is the new chief executive officer for the Strathmore and District Agricultural Society, effective February 2019.
Schmidt replaces outgoing general manager Herb McLane.
Schmidt will be responsible for leading the agricultural society in its mission to strengthen and advance Strathmore’s ranching and farming heritage while supporting and building community through events and recreation.
Schmidt holds a master’s degree in philosophy, and is the two-time recipient of the Governor General’s Academic Medal and a 2018 recipient of TransAlta President’s Award for Project of the Year.
Together with his wife Heather, Schmidt owns and operates a farm near Strathmore where they raise their growing family.
“I cannot express how excited I am to take on this new role. The opportunity to marry two passions of mine, agriculture and community service, all while helping to build up such an important and historic organization is my dream job,” Schmidt said. “As the new CEO of the agricultural society, I will prioritize strengthening community ties, while building on past success by inviting a new generation to enter into Strathmore’s proud ranching and farming legacy. I look forward to working with the board and other community groups in serving our town.”
