Strathmore High School’s Me to We Club is hosting an event called We Scare Hunger on Halloween.
We Scare Hunger is a food bank collection in a unique way. The event is held to collect non-perishable food items that can then be donated to the Wheatland food drive
At 6:30 p.m. on Halloween, volunteers and members of the Me to We Club will go around the community trick-or-treating to collect food items.
“We chose Halloween because it is a great opportunity to help others in a fun way by incorporating the enjoyment of trick-or-treating,” says Brittyn Paiha, a member of the Me to We Club.
The We Scare Hunger event has been held for many years and last year the club collected a whopping 1,623 pounds of food.
Some members in the Me to We Club have been volunteering in this event for the last four years. Several teachers and students from the Me to We Club put in their time and effort to make this event a success.
The Me to We Club was initiated by Christine Magill, a Strathmore High School teacher who is now retired. She went to Rwanda on a volunteer trip and when she came back she discussed the trip with her students in various classes. Soon afterwards, one of her students also decided to go on a volunteer trip. With that trip and with other students who wanted to be involved in the community, the club was formed.
The Me to We Club is a part of the Me to We Organization. The aim of the club is to bring awareness for individuals and groups who are underprivileged, not only in our community but also on a larger scale in the world. The club hosts many events to raise money and other helpful items for the people who require them in our community.
There are three teachers and around 10 students who are currently involved in the club. Many of the students involved are international students who love to pitch in and help others around the world.
“Me to We club has been a pivotal piece for connecting the students of SHS,” said Reanna Thiessen, a member of the club. “It gives passionate people a chance to work with like-minded thinkers to make the world a better place.”
This year the club is going to focus on raising money for a pillar of the Me to We movement. Every small donation is appreciated and is put to a good cause around the community and the world.
The club has upcoming events and fundraisers such as bake sales and an annual benefit concert. There will also be a silent auction in the spring.
To help in the We Scare Hunger event taking place on Halloween, people in the community can have non-perishable items ready for collection in the evening, or drop off some food to Strathmore High School during the day or the Wheatland Food Bank anytime they are open.
