A local woman and her son were honoured by the Strathmore Fire Department on Jan. 8 after receiving a Citizenship Award following their successful efforts in extinguishing a garbage can fire last year.
On Oct. 27, 2018 at 3:50 p.m., Nadine Horne and her son James Horne were walking past the doors at the Strathmore Family Centre when they noticed smoke rising out of a garbage can. They jumped into action and found the nearest fire extinguisher to extinguish the blaze even as other pedestrians allegedly walked past the burning can.
“She actually decided to do something about it, she found the fire extinguisher and she put it out with the assistance of James,” said Lauren McGougan, communications specialist with the Strathmore Fire Department.
“Ultimately, we decided we should do something for her because she went above and beyond, it’s pretty easy to walk by and ignore a situation like that but she went out of her way to do the right thing and we wanted to recognize that,” she said.
Horne was honoured during a training night at the fire hall where Deputy Fire Chief John Silva presented her with a citizenship award certificate signed by Mayor Pat Fule and Fire Chief Trent West, along with a Town of Strathmore blanket.
James also received a certificate and a pair of Town of Strathmore Bluetooth headphones, along with a full tour of the fire hall.
