Human remains were found at the scene of a fire north of Langdon and now the RCMP Major Crimes Unit (MCU) South is investigating.
Strathmore RCMP responded to the structure fire on a rural property in the early morning hours of Oct. 1, and MCU and the Calgary RCMP Forensic Identification Section were called in after human remains were found in the burned-out building.
On Oct. 2, an autopsy was conducted at the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Calgary. Further investigation is being completed to identify the deceased person.
The cause of the structure fire remains under investigation by the District Fire Chief in Rocky View County. The county said further information would come from the RCMP.
The RCMP Media Relations Group did not identify the type of structure that burned nor whether it was abandoned at the time of the fire. A report by Global News in Calgary, however, stated the structure was a workshop on a rural property and that no one was living on the property at the time.
“Police responded to the fire (and) once the fire was out, they determined there was a human in the fire,” said Corporal Laurel Scott with the RCMP Media Relations Group. Scott couldn’t provide an update on whether the remains were male or female, or the age of the victim.
The investigation is still ongoing.
