Emergency preparedness awareness

By Catherine Walsh Town of Strathmore Emergency Management Coordinator

Emergency Preparedness Week is May 5-11. The week is a countrywide initiative as a way to remind people to prepare themselves and their families in case of an emergency.
The Town of Strathmore has a variety of tips to ensure that people are prepared for an emergency.
Emergency preparedness starts with a 72-hour emergency kit, which every home should have. Emergency kits should include the following:
• Three-day supply of water
• Three-day supply of non-perishable food for all family members and pets
• First-aid kit
• Flashlight
• Battery-powered radio
• Extra batteries
• An extra set of car keys, credit cards and cash
• Sanitation supplies
It is also important to have an emergency plan in place that each family member is aware of. This should include where family members are to meet in case of evacuation, phone numbers that individuals can be reached at, and having a place to stay in case of evacuation.
Preparedness within homes is important as well. Ensure that your home has working smoke and CO detectors and that you change the batteries at daylight savings time. Ensure that your home has a fire extinguisher and plan an escape route in case of an emergency.
Please take time this Emergency Preparedness Week to ensure your home is prepared in case of an emergency.
