Stage Fright. Nerves. Tension. That’s all I could think about when I first entered the theatre. I was worried about judgment; I didn’t want everyone to think that I was just a jumbled mess with no talent.
Despite my fears, I decided that the thrill and excitement of acting and singing outweighed the potential possibility of failure and judgment. So, I joined drama and not only did I not fail, but I got to meet the most accepting and encouraging group of people.
At Strathmore High School (SHS), the theatre creates an atmosphere that connects students of all different ethnicities, genders and backgrounds. Although the process is difficult, everyone always comes together to create a magical and captivating performance.
Throughout the rehearsals and performances, it is incredible to see the amount of support and cooperation by every member of the class. If you are nervous, someone will be there to give you a hug. If you need encouragement, someone will be there to give you a high five and a million compliments.
When you watch a show, you only see a small fraction of the work and passion that goes into the performance over the course of several months. Behind the scenes, there is always a group of talented and dedicated cast members who work together to ensure the end result is something worth being proud of.
During my time at SHS, I have been a part of Mary Poppins and The Christmas Carol. Both shows were a lot of hard work but in the end, I can honestly say that being a part of these productions was one of the most remarkable and memorable times of my life.
Deanne Bertsch, the current drama teacher at SHS, plays an integral part in ensuring all students come together to create something beautiful. She says theatre “is about connecting with one another through our stories.”
We all have a story to share, we all have something to give, and Bertsch creates an environment where people are open to share stories and find passion and connection with a group of incredible people.
I would encourage anybody wondering about theatre to try it; you will make connections and have the chance to be a part of something truly wonderful.
