Curling season begins in Strathmore

Another year of curling is underway, and the various leagues at the Strathmore and District Curling Club have started the 2019-20 season.
The club, which has existed in its current location on Brent Boulevard since the mid-1980s, has seen a lot of changes over the past few years.
According to Strathmore Curling Club president Ken Shackleton, most of the changes involve the club building itself.
“We have some new flooring, the walls have been painted, and the Elks room is being expanded downstairs,” said Shackleton. “We have also put new dividers in the bathrooms and painted in there as well. We will soon be replacing the flooring at the front entrance.”
The curling club currently hosts a men’s league that goes Monday nights, a ladies league that runs on Tuesday nights, a mixed league with games on Thursday and Friday nights, a junior league that plays Wednesdays after school, a high school league that plays Thursdays after school, and a drop-in league that goes Monday, Wednesday and Friday afternoons from 2-4 p.m.
The various leagues also host bonspiels through the season: a shorty bonspiel goes Jan. 4; mixed bonspiel Jan. 22-26; ladies bonspiel Feb. 6-9; junior bonspiel Feb. 21-23; and men’s bonspiel March 16-22.
This year, the Big Country Senior Sports Society is hosting a fun curling bonspiel on Nov. 19.
Although the leagues are starting play this month, it’s not too late to join in.
“We welcome anyone to sign up on the spare list, which is a good way to get started,” said Shackleton.
The drop-in curling league is another good place to get started or to improve your skill set.
