Braves on both sides of big games
By Brady Grove, Times Reporter
It was a tale of two stories for the Wheatland Braves as they lost 7-1 to the Lethbridge Hurricanes Red on Feb. 15 in Hussar, but rebounded for a 7-3 victory over the Okotoks Oilers Green on Feb. 16 in Strathmore.
The local double-A peewee team outshot the Hurricanes 30-28, but they just couldn’t find the back of the net enough to remain in the game. Braves forward Luc Trevors was the lone goal scorer for the local club.
The Braves peppered the Oilers goaltender in the next game, outshooting their opponents by 18 with 11 different Braves players finding the score sheet. Braves goalie Connor White made 24 saves for the win.
The season is winding down and the Braves head into their second last weekend with a record of 14-10-5, sitting fourth in the south conference.
They will face off against the Airdrie Lightning Red on Feb. 22 at 7:30 p.m. at the Strathmore Family Centre and then head on the road to play against the Central Alberta Selects on Feb. 24 in Lacombe.
Chiefs start three-game winning streak
The Wheatland Chiefs are starting to roll as the season comes to an end. They picked up two wins on the weekend; first, 5-1 against the Central Alberta Selects on Feb. 16 in Hussar; and second, 3-2 against the Taber Golden Suns on Feb. 17 in Taber.
The wins have pushed the local double-A midget team to .500 with a 14-14-3 record, which puts them in fifth place in the south conference.
The Chiefs have a pair of home games coming up: the Golden Suns get a chance at revenge on Feb. 23 at 4:45 p.m.; and the Okotoks Oilers will visit on Feb. 24 at 4:15 p.m.
Warriors on long undefeated run
The Wheatland Warriors have been one of the top teams in the league this year and continued to prove why with a 4-1 win against the Airdrie Lightning on Feb. 15 at the Strathmore Family Centre and a 4-2 road victory against the Okotoks Oilers on Feb. 16.
The local double-A bantam team is now riding an eight-game winning streak. They have a record of 28-3-1 and sit in first place in the league.
They will wrap up their regular season next weekend against the Olds Grizzlys on Feb. 22 in Hussar and the Red Deer Steel Kings on Feb. 24 at 1:30 p.m. at the Strathmore Family Centre.
