Strathmore drops the puck on Let’s Get Rec’d

The Town of Strathmore has found a perfect formula to get people excited about the month-long Let’s Get Rec’d campaign as a way to promote an active outdoor lifestyle.
The ball hockey tournament has become an annual tradition at Kinsmen Park, for obvious reasons: the shining sun, the warm temperatures and kids buzzing with energy at a chance to compete in some road hockey with friends.
This year’s instalment of the tournament featured 24 teams, comprised of local boys and girls, ranging from five to 17 years of age playing in three-on-three styled games.
“This event keeps growing each year and the kids are having a great time,” said Lauren McGougan, community services liaison with the Town of Strathmore. “How could they not? It’s a great day to be outside playing some road hockey.”
More than 160 kids entered the tournament this year. Each player was given a free meal by the food truck, donated by Sweet Tooth Concession, along with a T-shirt, donated by Murray Chrysler, to commemorate the tournament.
Three mini rinks were set up with wooden boards to maximize the amount of hockey that could be played. The nets, boards and some of the gear was donated by Canadian Tire.
The big winners on the day were the Knights, who knocked off the Glitter Girls 9-1 in the Division 1 U10 final. In another U10 division, the Buffalo Bombers defeated the Mighty Pucks 8-3 in the final. The Road Warriors were the cream of the crop in Division 3, as they clipped the Stick Magnets 6-5, ending their shot at finishing undefeated. The Wheatland Snipers slid past the Sacred Sixers 9-6 in the final.
Other Let’s Get Rec’d events taking place include: a Western Historical District Society walking tour June 9; a bocce ball tournament June 10 next to the library; Art in the Park June 15 and June 22 at the Kinsmen Park Pavilion; and an outdoor yoga session June 16 at the Strathmore Municipal Library.
