No pain, no gain

As we near the end of the first month of 2018, I thought about what goals I wanted to achieve in my personal life. The first thing I thought of was to get myself into shape.
Now, as a person with a disability, I had to make a few dietary changes (mainly cutting sugars and adding more protein) and also learn to adapt to certain exercises and techniques, because after doing a little research online, I found there were limited programs for people confined to a wheelchair like myself. However, I was determined to get into the best shape I possibly could.
After doing some further research, I found an exercise online called Seated Workouts, and quite honestly, I can’t recommend it enough. For those of you wondering what Seated Workouts are, it’s an online program that’s made specifically for people who are mainly wheelchair bound. It has everything from strength – for me I use free weights as using weight machines at a gym wouldn’t really benefit my needs due to my wheelchair; and cardio – my favourite is shadow boxing, which is a great way to boost the heart rate. It can be tiring at times, but it’s a great way to get motivated, especially if you are confined to a wheelchair, and I personally really enjoy it.
I got into fitness because I needed to get in better shape. At the same time, I also wanted to live a healthier lifestyle because at the end of the day, we all have one life to live and it’s up to us to live it to the best of our ability because we are never guaranteed tomorrow.
As I write this column, I have to say that it makes me happy to know that people are having an interest in what I have to say, because my ultimate goal in life is always to encourage people to look at the brighter side of life and realize that there’s more to life than the latest trends or what the latest celebrity gossip is.
But my biggest goal is to encourage people to have the mindset that they can get through anything that life throws at them, just as long as they keep a positive mindset, push through their obstacles and don’t ever give up, because we can get through anything, we just have to believe in ourselves that we can do it.
