The puck continued to find the net for the Wheatland Braves as they won another two games on the weekend, including a 6-1 owning of the Red Deer Motors at the Strathmore Family Centre on Oct. 14.
The local double-A peewee team pressed the attack all night, finding holes in the Motors defense and firing 41 shots on goal.
“We made progress this weekend, despite the result one way or the other,” said Braves Head Coach Keith Klemmensen. “That’s the most important thing.”
The Braves set the tone quickly in the game but the Motors goaltender held his team in it. It wasn’t until Braves forward Connor Radke tipped a point shot from defenceman Tori Evans to get their team on the board.
In the second period the Braves exploited their passing game and individual skill sets. Braves forward Trip Jensen scored quickly for his team, but Red Deer responded, keeping the score close. The Motors couldn’t hold off the Braves forever as Nash Wassing and Luc Trevors both found a way to score up close.
“Once they adjusted to the fact that they can’t hit the goalie in the crest like they did (a number) of times in the first period … they actually shot the puck instead of trying to make a lot of dekes.” said Klemmensen.
Forward Kyle McDonough added the final two goals in the third and Braves goaltender Connor White made 20 saves in the victory.
The peewee Braves also won 7-3 against the Lethbridge Hurricanes White on Oct 12. The Braves are tied for first place in the south conference with the Medicine Hat Hounds. Both clubs have a 5-1 record.
The Braves won’t have to travel far for their next game against the Chestermere Lakers on Oct. 19.
Meanwhile, the Wheatland Warriors had a successful weekend road trip, beating the Medicine Hat Hounds 8-4 on Oct. 13 and the Lethbridge Hurricanes 3-1 the next night. The local double-A bantam team is sitting at 3-1-1 and will look to fend off a vengeful Hurricanes team in Strathmore on Oct. 19 at 7:30 p.m.
The Wheatland Chiefs were blanked 4-0 by the Medicine Hat Hounds. The loss dropped the double-A midget team to the middle of the pack with a 2-3 record, but they will have plenty of chances coming up with three games this week, including an afternoon home game against the Foothills Bisons on Oct. 21 at 1:30 p.m.
