The rosters for the inaugural Women’s Slo-Pitch Border Battle have been announced, and they carry a Strathmore flavour.
Local product Amanda Sanderson has been named to the Canadian squad that will take on their American counterparts July 1, in Oklahoma City.
“We have played Amanda for years, and she is always one of the toughest hitters to get out,” said Team Canada head coach Tony Carnelos.
There was no tryout camp, but a selection process was made based on past knowledge and scouting of the players.
“It’s always an honour to represent your country, but to be a part of the first ever Women’s Border Battle will be very special” said Carnelos. “We have assembled a team of very talented and well-deserving players and I look forward to coaching them.”
Carnelos has coached the Miken Home Run Sports Lady Birds for years, and has run into Sanderson while she was playing for the Alberta Sparqs the past couple of summers.
Primarily an outfielder, the right-handed hitting Sanderson will be relied on to use her speed in the outfield, covering the vast territory of ASA Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City.
Team Canada will head down south a couple days prior to the one-game showdown to play a handful of exhibition games, to get acclimatized to the environment.
